In a world without law, there would be only natural limits. Law exists for the purpose of creating and defining man made limits. It is by understanding what it is that law intends to limit that you can begin to understand your place within your system of law. When you understand your place within your system of law, you gain an ability to move more freely within it. What, then, does the law intend to limit?
You
You are a being with free will, and your will shall be done to the extent to which you are aware of, and apply it. Your will gives you the power to form intent. From intent springs creation. The brightest and the darkest of souls have demonstrated the heights to which you may rise and the depths to which you may sink with the use of your free will.
Ideally, you would be the only one with free will, but there are more than 6 billion other people on this planet; each equipped with a will of their own.
Because dealing with so many other wills can sometimes be challenging, it's a natural tendency for us to compel others to yield their free will to our own. That's why there are power struggles between individuals. That's why there are power struggles between nations. That is why there are statute laws.

Statute law
Statutes are created by small groups of people for the purposes of managing the wills of large groups of people.
STATUTE, n. An act of the legislature declaring, commanding, or prohibiting something[...] The written will of the legislature [my emphasis].
-Black's Law Dictionary, 4th Ed., s.v. "statute"
Some systems of law recognize only the wills of the law makers. Other systems of law have struck a balance between recognizing the wills of the law makers and the wills of individuals.
Personal liberty
A recognition of your human rights and fundamental freedoms - personal liberty - is a recognition of your free will. If you are fortunate enough to live in a system of law that recognizes your free will, you have available to you a rare treasure.
"Freedom... personal liberty, is the most precious thing on earth. It is also one of the rarest; hence its great value."
- Earl Nightingale
The purpose of the Nature of Your Person is to provide a map to that treasure. While lawmakers may choose to recognize your right to exercise human rights and fundamental freedoms, they have left it up to you to discover what those rights and freedoms are and how to go about exercising them. If you do not know your rights and freedoms, you cannot exercise them with intent. If you do not exercise them with intent they may be lost; as a judge states in the following court summary:
"Because these constitutional or quasi-constitutional instruments are drafted differently, they are susceptible of producing cumulative effects for the better protection of rights and freedoms. But this beneficial result will be lost if these instruments fall into neglect." [my emphasis]
- Authorson (Guardian of) v. Canada (Attorney general), 2002 CanLII 23598 (ON C.A.), online: www.canlii.org
Choose differently
Your system of law is woven with intricacy and care. It ensures that the choice between being a servant to the written will of the legislature and being the master of yourself is consistently maintained.
You have the tremendous advantage of living in a system of law that recognizes your worth as an individual - that recognizes your free will. You have the advantage of living in a system of choice. If you have not felt like you have a choice, it may be that you are unaware of the choices you have available to you.
